A Partner of KORNFELD MACKOFF SILBER LLP since 2000, Shafik Bhalloo's
practice is focused in the areas of corporate commercial litigation,
general civil litigation and labour and employment law.
Born in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, Shafik completed an Honours B.A.
at Simon Fraser University and received his law degree from the University
of British Columbia in 1989. Shafik recently obtained his Masters
of Law degree with a focus on e-Business from Osgoode Hall Law School.
Shafik has acted on litigation of multi-party commercial/corporate
and securities cases. He has also prosecuted and defended personal
injury claims, fire and casualty claims, breaches of sale of goods,
as well as real estate contracts and negligence claims against insurance
and real estate companies, agents and brokers.
In his labour and employment practice, Shafik has represented numerous
large and small companies in labour relations matters including grievances,
collective bargaining, certification applications and employment terminations.
He appears before the Labour Relations Board in certification applications
and unfair labour practice complaints, and before the Supreme Court
of British Columbia on wrongful dismissal matters. Shafik has obtained
certification in mediation and has participated as counsel in mediations
involving commercial, insurance, labour and employment disputes.
Shafik has lectured on non-competition covenants in business and employment contracts, prepared and presented materials for the Continuing Legal Education Society and the Vancouver Board of Trade among others and authored several academic articles. He is active in the community and was recently appointed to the Judicial Advisory Committee*. Shafik is also a part-time professor in the Criminology Department at Simon Fraser University. He has also served as a member on the Vancouver Police Department's Diversity Advisory Committee** and the Conciliation and Arbitration Board of the Ismaili Community and served as a legal officer with the Salvation Army.
*The Advisory Committee to the Judicial Council of BC is an important
component of the decision-making process for appointing new Provincial
Court judges. The Committee's task is to help the Judicial Council
of British Columbia assess applicants for the Provincial Court Bench.
The Advisory Committee makes reports on all applicants who apply for
a position with the Provincial Court and is the primary source of
information for assessing the suitability of applicants, as well as,
the primary source of information for deciding whether or not the
Judicial Council will grant an interview.
**The Vancouver Police Department's Diversity Advisory Committee works to build positive relations within, and between, our diverse communites. The Commitee works to remove the barriers between the VDP and community members and places and emphasis on acheiving equality.
