A founding Partner of KORNFELD MACKOFF SILBER LLP, Joel Mackoff practises exclusively in the field of civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Joel received his B.A. (Hon.) Phil. in 1972 from the University of British Columbia and subsequently completed his law degree there. Upon being called to the bar, he joined Freeman & Company, later becoming a partner of the firm.

Joel's practice spans a broad range of commercial and tort litigation. He has acted in commercial litigation involving claims of real estate, professional malpractice, intellectual property, confidential information, shareholder disputes and insurance. In the area of intellectual property disputes, Joel has worked intensively in computer-related issues, such as disputes involving domain names and misappropriation of database design.

Joel has also acted as counsel both for financial institutions and debtors in numerous debtor-creditor, insolvency and priority disputes. His extensive experience in tort litigation has included counsel work involving claims for wrongful death, medical malpractice, severe personal injury arising from trauma, as well as defamation. Among his many notable cases, Joel succeeded in a medical malpractice suit against two local emergency physicians.

In addition to appearing before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Canada, Joel has acted as counsel before professional disciplinary tribunals, as well as in arbitrations and on mediations. He is an experienced mediator and a member of the British Columbia Mediator Roster (Civil).

Joel sits on the Board of Directors of an E-Learning company. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of the North Shore Jewish Community Association (Congregation Har-El). Joel is married and the proud father of three children.
