We are delighted to announce that Shane Coblin, James McRae and Dan Parlow have recently become partners. Congratulations Shane, Jamie and Dan!
Jamie practices primarily in the area of real estate law. His real estate practice is wide-ranging and involves complex development and redevelopment projects. He has extensive experience with the purchase and sale of all forms of real estate, strata title development, commercial and residential subdivisions including air space plan subdivisions, financing, as well as commercial leasing.
Shane has extensive experience in all facets of commercial litigation. He has assisted clients of all sizes in resolving disputes in the areas of real estate, construction, wrongful dismissal, shareholder relations, defamation and professional negligence. He is called to the Bar of both British Columbia and Ontario.
Since 1986, Dan has helped resolve commercial disputes for clients in claims over investments, business assets and contracts, shareholder and partnership interests and commercial property; over wills, trusts and related interests; and over professional obligations of realtors, lawyers, accountants, brokers and investment advisors. Dan is co-editor of the firm's new businesslawblog.ca, being launched Feb. 2010.

Doug has been an insolvency practitioner for almost 25 years now. During those many years he has built up a substantial insolvency practice, acting for both institutional and private lenders, creditors, debtors, receivers and trustees in bankruptcy on many complex matters ranging from collections and foreclosures through to bankruptcies, receiverships and re-organization. He has worked extensively on a number of re-organizations and attempted re-organizations under the provisions of the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, acting for creditors, both secured and unsecured, lessors of equipment and debtor companies.
Doug is founder and past Editor-in-Chief of Butterworths' quarterly publication National Creditor/Debtor Review, and the Regional Editor of Canadian Forms and Precedents, Banking and Finance. He lectured for Insight, the Canadian Institute and Continuing Legal Education.

One of our partners, Lana Li, has practised for over 19 years as a commercial and civil litigator. For about the last 15 years, Lana has taken on select family law disputes involving complex property disputes, family corporations, holding companies, and family trusts. Lana has appeared as trial and appellate counsel in both the B.C. Supreme Court and the B.C. Court of Appeal, including family law trials and related matters. Lana’s main focus in the family law area is to ensure that her clients’ property rights are recognized when a relationship breaks down, whether it be a marriage or a common law relationship.

KMS Hosts International Alliance of Law Firms AGM |
Kornfeld Mackoff Silber LLP recently played host to the International Alliance of Law Firms Annual General Meeting, from May 27 – May 30, 2008. The Alliance AGM was attended by 62 delegates from member firms and observers, who came from around the globe to experience “Super, Natural British Columbia” and for the unique forum of discussion with their contemporaries provided by the AGM. The event was considered a great success by all involved. Delegates travelled from every corner of the world, including Canada, the USA, Australia, Denmark, Brazil, the Isle of Man, France, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Switzerland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, China, Italy, Uruguay, Sweden, Spain, New Zealand, Germany, Chile, Malaysia, Panama, Argentina, Ecuador, and Israel.
A myriad of activities for delegates and guests kicked off with an introductory cocktail party for delegates and clients of KMS at the Transcontinental Restaurant in historic Gastown. Other events designed to enhance the delegates’ enjoyment of the city of Vancouver followed, including tours of Yaletown and Chinatown, an afternoon adventure on a Zodiac boat out of beautiful Horseshoe Bay, and a day trip to Whistler Mountain.
On Thursday, May 29, 2008, KMS hosted a luncheon featuring speaker John Furlong, president of VANOC. Mr. Furlong delivered a rousing and inspired speech on the dedication and perseverance of his committee to ensure the best Winter Games ever, when Vancouver hosts in 2010. His passionate oratory was extremely well received by the delegates, those who attended from KMS and their guests. The AGM concluded on Friday evening with a delightful dinner at Monk McQueen’s Restaurant, during which the AGM was lauded as a great success. After an enjoyable meal, the delegates parted ways with fond farewells.

Our Corporate Partner, Carol Alter Kerfoot has recently taken on a new role in the dynamic arena of transportation. With ongoing operations at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) generating 26,700 direct jobs, annual revenues in excess of $330 million and the 2010 Olympics coming up fast, the Vancouver International Airport Authority is a key organization from both transportation and tourism perspectives. It is a highly successful performer, rated by passenger surveys as the number four airport in the Americas and number seven worldwide. “I look forward to joining chair Graham Clark, CEO Larry Berg and the balance of the YVR Board of Directors at this exciting and promising time in the airport’s history”, said Kerfoot on the news of her prestigious appointment by The Law Society of British Columbia as their nominee. Ms. Kerfoot has a commercial practice that is focused on business acquisition and divestiture transactions and includes real estate, shareholders’ disputes and corporate governance matters. The firm expects to benefit from her appointment as her ability to advise clients is further enhanced by her expanded perspective.
